New figures out this month show that Wales' total greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 23.3% compared to 1990/1995 - the base year.
The figures also show that greenhouse gas emissions in Wales also fell from 49.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (MtCO2) in 2008 to 42.6 MtCO2 in 2009, indicating an ongoing, year on year decline. In a UK wide context the figures show that Wales produced 7.6% of the UK's total net greenhouse gas emissions in 2009, with England producing 77.6%, Scotland producing 8.6% and Northern Island producing 3.5%.
I am pleased these new figures show that greenhouse gas emissions continue to fall in Wales and I encourage the Welsh Government to do its part in ensuring this trend continues. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is essential for securing a healthy environment for future generations.
